Crews Battle to Contain Raging Arizona Wildfires

By Tim Gaynor

PHOENIX (Reuters) – Crews with hand tools battled to contain wind-whipped Arizona wildfires on Wednesday that have raced across more than 30 square miles of parched ponderosa forest, brush and grassland, consuming several buildings and threatening a small town.

The Sunflower Fire, the largest of at least four blazes in central and eastern Arizona, has burned nearly 20 square miles (52 square kilometers) in the Tonto National Forest, about 40 miles north of Phoenix, fire officials said.

Days after the weekend eruption of the blaze, fire crews had managed to carve containment lines around just 10 percent of its perimeter.

This week’s conflagrations marked the first major wildfires of the year in Arizona, after a record 2011 fire season in which nearly 2,000 recorded blazes swallowed more than 1,500 square miles, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The fires left a translucent veil of gray-brown smoke over the northeast Phoenix valley, obscuring views of nearby highlands where the blazes were burning.

About 350 residents of Crown King in central Arizona remained under evacuation orders after another blaze, the fast-moving Gladiator Fire, burned nearly 9 square miles (22 square kilometers) of ponderosa pine, brush and chaparral in the Prescott National Forest and destroyed several buildings.

Fanned by strong winds and dry weather, the Gladiator Fire also threatened homes in the Horsethief Basin area, as well as U.S. [More]

Review: ***+ $$ Marmesa Vineyards Cerro Romauldo Syrah, San Luis Obispo, Central Coast, California, 2006 = GOOD VALUE

Check out today’s pricing and retail availability for San Luis Obispo Syrah.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Here’s a relatively high alcohol, but reputedly lighter-bodied syrah than others you may find from, say, California or Australia.

Original tasting and review : This is Marmesa Vineyards Cerro Romauldo Syrah, San Luis Obispo, Central Coast, California, 2006, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium deep red/purple.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft, just lightly funky and fruity.  From the aroma, seems like this will be mild and balanced.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full purple with inky fruit on the nose – to me a bit more reminiscent of the warmer climate merlots than a Central Coast syrah.  There is some nice black pepper and a certain tannin “grab” that surrounds the somewhat simple center fruit, however, and brings this to a more interesting place.  It may, in fact, decant well.  Finish is quite clean and shows red fruit.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its persistent power, suggestive of promise for the future.  Makes good value status.

20 Things You Didn’t Know About… Allergies

peanuts

1. Our immune system may be like those small bands of Japanese ?holdout? soldiers after World War II. Not knowing that the war was over, they hid for years, launching guerrilla attacks on peaceful ?villages.

2. With our living environment well scrubbed of germs, our body?s immune ?soldiers? mistakenly fire on innocent peanuts and cat dander.

5. Most food allergies result from an immune response to a protein. In 2004 a team at Trinity College Dublin tried to counter that reaction by injecting mice with parasites, giving the animals? immune systems the sort of threat they evolved to fight, thus distracting them from the food proteins.

6. The experiment worked.

7. Excited by such findings, in 2007 British-born entrepreneur Jasper Lawrence flew to Cameroon and walked barefoot near some latrines. His aim was to acquire hookworms, which he hoped would defeat his asthma and seasonal allergies.

8. That worked too.

9. Lawrence has since started a business shipping the parasites worldwide (but not here, where the FDA prohibits it). For $3,000, customers receive up to 35 hookworm larvae…

Fugitive Penguin 337 Spotted Alive in Tokyo Bay

By Ruairidh Villar

TOKYO (Reuters) – After Penguin Number 337 made a daring bid for freedom from a Tokyo aquarium and vanished into the waters of Tokyo Bay two months ago, many feared the worst for the adventurous feathered fugitive.

But the one-year-old Humboldt penguin has now popped up on video footage in a different part of the bay, frolicking in the water and apparently healthy.

The penguin, still too young to determine whether it is male or female and thus known only by a number, scaled a rock wall four meters (13 ft) high and squeezed through a barbed wire fence to escape its harborside aquarium in March.

“You can see it’s got the same ring around its flipper and identical facial patterns,” said Kazuhiro Sakamoto, deputy director of the Tokyo Sea Life Park, when shown footage of the tubby escapee taken by Japan’s Coast Guard.

“It didn’t look like it has gotten thinner over the past two months, or been without food. [More]

Why the IAM red light survey annoyed me more as a cyclist than as a pollster

Unscientific opinion polls can be forgiven. Misrepresenting the facts to potentially put cyclists in danger cannot

Earlier this week the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) issued a press release headlined, “More than half of cyclists jump red lights”, claiming 57% of cyclists had jumped a red light at least once. The figure came from a poll on the IAM website to which many cyclists had responded, encouraged by tweets and cycling forums to add their experience.

Unusually, BikeBiz.com, an industry newsletter, and the Guardian broke an embargo to publicly criticise the IAM and its statistics in advance of publication by the rest of the media. Reaction across cycling forums and Twitter was quick to condemn the validity of the IAM’s figures and to question the organisation’s motives and integrity.

I’m trying hard to see this debacle as a case of good intentions gone horribly wrong rather than a case of the the IAM deliberately playing fast and loose with statistics and using cyclists as the bait to catch some red top headlines.

I’m also struggling to resist schadenfreude because, as a professional pollster, I normally at least allow myself a wry smile when poor research gets outed and usually laugh out loud when this type of home-cooked, half-baked poll falls flat.

I’m trying not to gloat because even though I’m both a researcher and a cyclist, I’m finding it difficult to put the IAM in the same sentence as the phrase “fast and loose”. In my mind, the IAM are sticklers, an organisation of cardiganed uncles driving within the speed limit, hands at ten to two and able to stop well within the necessary distance. Hardly the type of people to take chances and act with any reckless disregard.

I’m struggling because I know from working with him on research projects for Road Safety Scotland and the Scottish government that Neil Greig, the IAM’s director of policy and research, is a decent man, committed to improving road safety, who gives good advice.

But I’m also pretty angry with the IAM, for this reason: I am one of their 57%. I picked up the tweets, I read about the survey on my local cycling forum, and I filled it in, wanting to add my experiences thinking, as I suspect many others did, that it would add, in some way, to the calls for improvements in cycling provision.

I’m not angry because I’ve only just found out that this type of poll is not a carefully crafted and systematically sampled survey of the cycling and motoring population. I’ve designed those and I know they don’t involve tweeting your mates and sending them to a website where you can complete the survey as many times as you like.

I’m not even angry because the IAM used the results for publicity. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Who doesn’t these days, especially when newspapers will recycle press releases with barely an amendment?

But this one is different. First, because it misrepresents me personally and many people like me. People who ride day in, day out, carefully doing what it takes to get to work on time and home alive. I am one of the 57% although my particular red light is part of Edinburgh’s tram works and simply fails to detect a cyclist. You either ride through it or sit there until a car comes along. At 7.15am that could take a long time.

Second, I am angry because in spite of all the weaknesses in this type of uncontrolled, self-selecting, online polling, the real dodge was to accumulate the frequent, sometimes, rarely and “once or twice” and include them all in the “over half of cyclists” headline. With this sleight of hand sensible manoeuvres and distant misdemeanours are turned into a current habit and whatever subsequent explanations follow, what sticks is that 57% of cyclists jump red lights.

But most importantly, I am angry with IAM because while most of these polls are silly PR fluff, this particular example is potentially dangerous. Many cyclists already feel that they are treated with contempt by drivers and that their safety is compromised on Britain’s clogged and poorly designed roads. Distorting the data and giving the impression of cyclists as serial lawbreakers has real potential to bring those wing mirrors a little bit closer, make the abuse a little louder and the cutting up a little more life threatening.

The reality is that cyclists are being killed on Britain’s roads to an extent that has motivated thousands of cyclists to campaign for better safety. IAM members, who represent the antithesis of the driving that cyclists experience everyday, should be cyclists’ allies. The organisation had been making genuine attempts to contribute to improving safety.

One can only wonder what happened when the release was written but in what seems like a momentary lapse in concentration, the trust that saw cyclists help IAM’s polling efforts has been thrown away. A familiar story: cyclists hurt because someone wasn’t paying attention.

Lucy Mangan: saving the planet, one loo roll at a time

‘How are we ? after 30 years of being warned about impending disaster ? still working at a level at which an 11mm tweak to a cardboard tube can be lauded as any kind of triumph?’

Do you know that “Did I miss a memo?” feeling? You know, the one when someone says something so stupid or self-evidently untrue that you look up and down and round, open-mouthed, before mentally giving up and assuming that you must have missed a vital step in proceedings somehow. I get it about a thousand times a day, but never more strongly than when a new corporate green initiative is trumpeted.

Sainsbury’s, for example, recently announced it was reducing the size of its loo rolls’ inner tubes. Less cardboard, you see, and fewer lorries transporting smaller packages means fewer carbon emissions polluting the atmosphere. Praise for the company’s ecological awareness duly flooded in.

I’m sorry, did I miss a memo? Specifically, did I miss a memo saying, “Great news just in, world population! We have made such brilliant, unexpected and entirely unpublicised leaps in combating global warming, reversing the rising tides and inventing perfect, totally harmless substitutes for irreplaceable resources that all we’ve got left to do is a quick nip-and-tuck on loo rolls. The rainforest is saved! All known species have unendangered themselves! China’s agreed to knock all that economic superpower stuff on the head and go back to subsistence-level farming, while the Americans have agreed that it’ll be nothing but tofu burgers from sea to shining sea from now on. And everyone has agreed to stop, literally and metaphorically, fracking about. Hurrah!”

My point is: how are we ? after 30 years of being warned about impending disaster ? still working at a level at which an 11mm tweak to a cardboard tube can be lauded as any kind of triumph?

I haven’t used an aerosol of any kind since 1985 when I first heard about CFCs (remember them?) leading to holes in the ozone layer, more UV rays and polar icecaps melting and ? in what I appreciated even then as a notable irony ? washing away the parched corpses strewn across a baking land. It spooked me then, and now ? as I watch actual film footage of actual polar bears stranded on disintegrating ice floes on warming waters, turning the nightmare into literal, visible fact ? it terrifies me.

Why does it not, seemingly, terrify the powers that be? While we all do our piddling, insignificant, individual bit, they do nothing. Nothing compared with what they could be doing, nothing compared with what they should be doing.

We should ? as we stare down the barrel of a catastrophic two-degree and more likely we-need-a-new-word-for-catastrophic four-degree rise in worldwide temperatures ? be at this level: unquestioned rule by green despots charged with saving this planet from becoming a spinning ball of dust. Carbon rationing. National service for all, laying the ground- and pipework for a national water grid (through which shall be pumped H2O laced with iron, to replace the meat we can no longer have, and contraception to stop the children we can no longer support). Coupon books issued at birth for all other goods, worked out according to a highly detailed but essentially simple equation that boils down to this: finite resources left divided by number of people left over number of years remaining species would like to live.

The Kids Are All Right, Even if Their Parents Grow Pot

Filed under:

Credit: AP

Just because the folks next door are drug dealers doesn’t mean they’re bad parents.

In fact, researchers at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children say the children of couples who operate marijuana grow rooms are often extremely healthy, physically and emotionally. And they rarely use illegal drugs.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports researchers question whether parents caught growing marijuana should automatically lose custody of their children.

“After examining 75 of the kids over several years, we came to very clear conclusions that a vast majority of these kids are doing well — well fed, well kept, doing well in school and developing well,” lead researcher Gideon Koren of the University of Toronto tells the CBC. “Taking a small child from his or her parents in a well-adapted environment causes fear, anxiety, confusion and sadness.”

Traditional procedure in Toronto, the network reports, has been to remove children from homes where illegal marijuana operations have been discovered and place the kids in foster care.

Patrick Lake, executive director of York Region Children’s Aid Society, tells the CBC child welfare workers have learned more about the effects marijuana growing operations have on children since 2006, and have changed how they maintain the children’s safety.

“We have developed a more customized and comprehensive process to determine best response, on a case-by-case basis, while looking for ways to safely maintain children with their parents or relatives,” Lake says.

Koren tells the CBC he hopes Canadian authorities will see the children of pot growers a little differently after his study.

“When police and children’s aid go into that situation, they have to look much more carefully on what happened to that child, and not blanket-wise moving kids out of their homes,” he says.

Spring weather baffles butterflies

Some species emerged unusually early due to the warm March while others have been hit by April deluge, conservationists say

The spring weather has baffled Britain’s butterflies, with some emerging unusually early due to the warm March while others were hit by the April deluge, conservationists said on Friday.

Some spring species emerged several weeks early in March, but the wettest April on record and the continuing rain this month has delayed the appearance of many butterflies.

And wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation is warning that if the wet conditions continue it could affect the breeding success of some species later in the year.

Cold, wet weather makes butterflies less active, reducing feeding and mating.

Among those to put in an early appearance were the small blue butterfly, which was seen on 30 March on the Isle of Wight, one of the earliest dates recorded for the species and several weeks ahead of its usual emergence between mid-April and early May.

The wood white, which usually emerges in late April or May, was seen on 10 April in Surrey, while the threatened pearl-bordered fritillary was also recorded earlier than usual, Butterfly Conservation said.

But as the wet weather took hold, butterflies started to be spotted later than normal, with the common blue and brown argus appearing in early May, rather than being seen in mid-April which they would be in warm years.

Marsh fritillaries and adonis blues both emerged in the final week of April in 2011 but were not seen until the second week of May this year.

Richard Fox, Butterfly Conservation surveys manager, said: “Overall, butterflies have experienced an unusual spring so far – the mild winter and very warm March led to some extremely early emergences, but the cold, wet April delayed the emergence of other species.

“The worry about this April is that the butterflies that did emerge will have poor breeding success due to the bad weather.

“Unless conditions improve in the next few weeks their opportunities to breed will be very limited and, therefore, we may see population crashes later in the year or next spring.”

He added: “Last year we had a hot spring and a poor summer. This year we’re having a poor spring, so let’s hope the summer is better.”

Don?t forget the Space X launch! | Bad Astronomy

Space X is looking good to launch its Falcon 9 + Dragon capsule on Saturday morning at 08:55 UTC (04:55 Eastern US time). NASA tweeted about it, saying there’s a 70% chance of good weather at that time. It’s Florida, so that can change in an instant. Check with NASA and Space X for updates.

Space X put together a press kit with details on the launch and mission activities. Via Universe Today I saw this nice video with a great CGI animation of what will happen:

It’s actually a couple of years old, but still fun to watch. NASA TV will be carrying the launch live, as will Space X, and Elon Musk — CEO of Space X– will be live-tweeting it.

The Solar Eclipse Coincidence

Annular eclipse (Credit: sancho_panza)

When the Sun is eclipsed by the Moon this Sunday, for many observers across much of the world it will be temporarily replaced by a beautiful ring of fire – a brilliant annulus of stellar plasma just peeking out around the dark lunar disk. This doesn’t always happen, partial solar eclipses merely trim away a chunk of the solar disk, and true total eclipses perfectly blank out the visible surface of the Sun. It’s all a matter of alignment between Sun-Moon-Earth and our mutual orbital gymnastics.

July 4 Parades Turn Kids into Republicans?

By Mark Berman Opposing Views

A new study out of Harvard University (so you know it’s true!) claims that children who attend Fourth of July parades are more likely to grow up to be Republicans than kids who stay in their backyards.

Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation’s political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the study found that kids under the age of 18 who attend parades are 2% more likely to become GOP voters. This is mostly because Republicans feel they are more patriotic than Democrats, study authors Harvard professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University professor Andreas Madestam wrote:

According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans.

Overall, parade watchers vote Republican over Democrat by 4%.

There is no evidence of an increased likelihood of identifying as a Democrat, indicating that Fourth of July shifts preferences to the right rather than increasing political polarization.

Regardless of your political leanings, the authors say in order to have the most fun, you just might want to head to a Republican stronghold to celebrate the Fourth, writing:

Republican adults celebrate Fourth of July more intensively in the first place.

Kids are Like Scientists, and Not Just Mad Ones

Filed under:

“Experiment. Make it your motto day and night. Experiment. And it will lead you to the light.” — Cole Porter

We commonly refer to something simple as mere child’s play.

However, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University say there is nothing “mere” about child’s play. Children are actually performing complex experiments.

They are little scientists, Wired magazine reports.

To prove just how scientifically children approach their work, researchers gave a group of them a toy that lights up and plays music when the child places certain beads on. When children didn’t know which beads would activate the toy — what scientists call “ambiguous evidence” — they tested each variable in turn.

Laura Schulz, a professor at MIT, tells Wired it’s like someone trying unsuccessfully to open a door with a key.

“You might change the position of the key, you might change the key, but you’re not going to change both at once,” she says.

Researchers say their study begins to “bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and child’s play.”

Remember that the next time you find flour scattered all over the kitchen. Scientific discovery can be messy.

Kids With Special Needs Get (Gasp!) Bullied

Credit: Getty Images

Brace yourselves for a shocker. Kids with special needs — who struggle with medical, emotional or emotional issues — tend to have more problems in school and are bullied more often than other kids.

Researchers at the Poindexter Institute for the Painfully Obvious reached this conclusion after examining their middle school yearbooks and remembering how they spent all of seventh grade trapped inside their lockers while asking if someone would please pass them their inhalers.

Their conclusions were backed up by researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

According to U.S. News & World Report, researchers there tracked more than 1,450 kids in fourth through sixth grades from 34 rural schools. A third of the kids had problems such as asthma, chronic pain, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities or emotional and behavioral problems.

These children were a more likely to be (wait for it, wait for it) bullied or feel socially isolated. These conclusions were further confirmed by everyone who has ever attended public school.

“Health affects school performance,” lead researcher Christopher Forrest tells U.S. News. “Special health care needs have manifold effects on school outcomes that increase the likelihood that these kids are not going to successfully transition to adulthood.”

Researchers obtained data from kids and their parents from a questionnaire. Children were classified as having a special health care need if they had a condition lasting at least 12 months and needed prescription drugs, therapy, counseling or other services.

School records on attendance, grades and standardized tests also were analyzed.

Kids with special health care needs “have significant differences in their engagement in school and their school relationships as well as academic achievement,” Forrest adds. “It sets up a trajectory for these kids that’s highly distressing.”

Communities can help if they look at the whole child, he says.

“I also believe it’s the kind of challenge we’re starting to understand in the 21st century,” Forrest says. “We have to look at the child as a whole person … and recognize that individuals need health systems and education systems to work together.”

The initial horror of learning that her financial adviser was a fraud brought on a range of reactions — panic, terror, self-blame, rage.
